There is a new quiz on the quiz page.
Sidney Lanier High School
The following is from the book, Montgomery in the Good War, Portrait of a Southern City 1939-1946, published in 2000, by Lanier graduate Wesley Phillips Newton. I think it sums up a descriptive of Lanier that suits this photo. Keep in mind he didn't cover years other than those in the title, thus there is no mention of the many other state championships of the football, basketball and baseball teams.
"The jewel of the school system was the city's only white public senior high, Sidney Lanier, founded near downtown in 1910 but moved in 1929 to South Court Street a block from West Fairview Avenue. The architecture, with its collegiate Gothic style and central tower of Alabama limestone, was eye-catching. The faculty ranked among the finest in the South and had a national reputation. There were no social promotions at Lanier. The city had three fine white private schools - Starke military school, Barnes School, and Margaret Booth for girls - yet Lanier was preferred for most children of the gentry. In addition to academics, Lanier offered superior extracurricular activities. Its band had few rivals in the state. The athletic program, especially for football, equaled the best in the state. The Lanier Poets won the state football championship in 1939 with an undefeated season."
